Haas VF-2 vs Hurco VM20i

Haas Automation vs Hurco · Vertical Machining Centers (VMC)

01

Summary

The Haas VF-2 and the Hurco VM20i are 40-taper vertical machining centers with the same 508 mm (20 in) of Z travel, but they are not the same machine in plan. The Hurco has the larger work area and the faster spindle; the Haas has the stronger spindle.

The Hurco VM20i travels 1,016 mm (40 in) in X and 508 mm (20 in) in Y against 30 in (762 mm) and 16 in (406 mm), carries 1,800 kg (3,970 lb) against 3,000 lb (1,361 kg), and runs to 12,000 rpm against 8,100 rpm. The Haas VF-2 answers with 30 hp (22.4 kW) against 15 kW (20 hp) and 90 ft-lbf (122 N·m) of torque against 98.8 Nm (72.9 ft-lb).

Verdict

For long parts, deep plates and multi-vise setups, the Hurco VM20i is the better fit: 1,016 mm of X, 508 mm of Y and a 1,800 kg table load take work the Haas VF-2 cannot hold, and 12,000 rpm helps in aluminum. For smaller steel parts that are roughed hard, the Haas VF-2 puts 30 hp and more torque into the cut. Shops choosing between them should start with the largest part they expect to run.
