Overview

The TOS Varnsdorf WRTZ 200 is a large-capacity floor-type (floor boring mill) CNC horizontal boring machine with a 200 mm spindle diameter, designed for machining the largest and heaviest workpieces encountered in power generation, petrochemical, mining, and heavy engineering industries. TOS Varnsdorf, based in the Czech Republic, has been manufacturing floor-type boring machines for over 70 years and the WRTZ series represents the pinnacle of that heritage.

In a floor-type boring machine configuration, the workpiece sits stationary on the shop floor or a foundation-mounted floor plate, while the boring spindle column traverses in X and Y to reach all machined features. This eliminates the weight limits of a table-type machine, enabling the WRTZ 200 to handle workpieces of virtually unlimited size and weight — ship engine frames, large hydraulic press housings, nuclear reactor components, and wind turbine hubs have all been processed on machines of this type.

The WRTZ 200 spindle outputs up to 80 kW of cutting power and operates from 1 to 1,600 rpm, providing the torque needed for both heavy facing cuts with large face mills and precision finish boring to tight diameter tolerances. The W-axis spindle extension of up to 1,250 mm provides reach for deep internal features without moving the column, while the U-axis boring bar supports fine finish boring to diameter.

TOS Varnsdorf offers the WRTZ 200 with Siemens SINUMERIK 840D sl or Heidenhain iTNC 530 control, with full 5-axis simultaneous capability available. The machine's modular design allows configuration with rotary tables, pallet changers, and a comprehensive range of interchangeable spindle heads to meet specific application requirements.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 200 mm spindle and 80 kW motor deliver exceptional torque for heavy boring and facing
  • Floor-type design imposes no practical workpiece weight limit — handles the largest industrial components
  • W-axis spindle extension and U-axis boring bar support deep precision boring without column movement
  • Modular configuration with interchangeable heads covers full 5-face machining capability

Limitations

  • Extremely high capital cost and complex installation requiring deep foundation and overhead crane
  • Dedicated floor space requirements are substantial — floor rail length determines X travel
  • Very long lead times (18–36 months) for fully configured large floor boring mills

Best For

Power generation OEMs machining large turbine and generator casings and end shields Petrochemical equipment manufacturers producing reactor vessels and large valve bodies Ship and marine engine builders working on multi-cylinder engine blocks and frames

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between a floor-type boring machine and a table-type boring machine?

In a table-type boring machine, the workpiece is clamped to a moving table and traverses past a fixed column. This limits workpiece weight to the table's load rating (typically 5,000–50,000 kg). In a floor-type machine like the WRTZ 200, the workpiece sits stationary on the floor and the column moves. This removes any practical weight limit and allows machining of components weighing hundreds of tonnes.

02 What industries typically use the TOS Varnsdorf WRTZ 200?

The WRTZ 200 is found primarily in power generation (turbine and generator OEMs), petrochemical equipment, mining equipment, large press manufacturing, shipbuilding, and defense. Any industry producing very large, heavy prismatic components with precise bored holes and machined faces is a potential user.

03 Can the WRTZ 200 perform milling as well as boring?

Yes. With an automatic tool changer and interchangeable milling heads, the WRTZ 200 performs face milling, pocket milling, contouring, and precision boring. The large spindle taper (ISO 50) supports high-torque face mill cutters for aggressive material removal on large surfaces.
