Overview
The Okuma LAW-V24 is a twin-spindle vertical CNC lathe with opposed spindle layout, designed for high-volume production of small disc-shaped and short cylindrical parts. The V in the designation indicates vertical spindle orientation, combining the benefits of twin-spindle complete-part machining with vertical construction for gravity-assisted chip evacuation. Maximum turning diameter is 240 mm (9.4 in) with a maximum turning height of 150 mm (5.9 in).
The upper and lower spindles each deliver 15/11 kW (20/15 hp) at up to 6,000 RPM with 150 Nm (111 ft-lb) of torque. The vertical orientation means chips fall away from the cutting zone by gravity, which is especially beneficial when machining cast iron and other materials that produce large volumes of chips. The 6,000 RPM capability provides good surface footage for aluminum and small-diameter steel parts.
Each spindle station features a turret with 8 stations and optional driven tools for cross-drilling and tapping. X-axis travel is 160 mm (6.3 in) and Z-axis travel is 250 mm (9.8 in) per station, with rapid traverse at 30 m/min. The part transfer between spindles is automated, with the upper spindle carrying the part to the lower spindle for OP20 machining.
The compact design fits production lines with minimal floor space. Machine weight is approximately 5,500 kg (12,125 lb) with a floor space of 1,800 x 2,200 mm (71 x 87 in). Okuma's Thermo-Friendly Concept and Collision Avoidance System are standard. The OSP-P300L control manages both spindles and the part transfer sequence.
The LAW-V24 competes with the Emag VL 2 twin, Fuji twin-spindle vertical machines, and Scherer vertical twin-spindle lathes. Pricing runs $200,000-$300,000 new. The machine targets automotive component manufacturers producing small pulleys, clutch components, valve seats, and bearing races at volumes exceeding 200,000 per year.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Vertical opposed-spindle design combines complete-part machining with gravity-assisted chip evacuation for clean cutting zones
- 6,000 RPM spindle speed provides excellent surface footage for small-diameter aluminum and steel parts
- Compact 1,800 x 2,200 mm footprint enables dense production line layouts with multiple machines
- Automated part transfer between spindles produces finished parts without operator intervention for flipping
- Vertical construction minimizes chip recutting and tool wear, particularly beneficial on cast iron and aluminum
- Thermo-Friendly Concept maintains dimensional accuracy through high-volume production runs
Limitations
- 240 mm turning diameter and 150 mm height limit the machine to small disc parts only; larger work requires the LAW-2S or LAW-F II
- 8-station turrets per spindle provide fewer tool positions than 12-station alternatives for complex parts
- 15 kW spindle power per station is modest for heavy roughing; the machine is optimized for light-to-medium cuts on small parts
- Vertical twin-spindle configuration is purpose-built for high-volume production and offers limited flexibility for job shop changeovers
- OSP control is Okuma-proprietary with no Fanuc or Siemens option

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new LAW-V24 typically runs $200,000-$300,000 depending on driven tool options and peripheral equipment. The vertical twin-spindle design provides complete-part capability at a lower price point than horizontal twin-spindle alternatives.
02
The LAW-2S is a horizontal opposed-spindle lathe with larger 260 mm turning diameter and greater turning length for shaft work. The LAW-V24 is a vertical opposed-spindle machine optimized for small disc parts with gravity chip evacuation. The LAW-2S is more versatile; the LAW-V24 excels at its specific disc-part niche.
03
Vertical orientation provides gravity-assisted chip evacuation, keeping the cutting zone clean without chip conveyors or air blast in many applications. This is especially beneficial for cast iron and aluminum which produce high chip volumes. The vertical design also typically has a smaller floor space footprint.
04
Small disc-shaped and short cylindrical parts under 240 mm diameter and 150 mm height: pulleys, clutch plates, valve seats, bearing races, small gear blanks, and flanged fittings. The parts must be chuckable and benefit from both-end machining capability.
