Overview

The Mazak QT-Ez 8M adds live tooling and C-axis capability to the value-oriented QT-Ez 8-inch turning center, delivering mill-turn capability at a price that competes directly with the Haas ST-20Y (minus Y-axis) and Doosan Lynx 2600M. The M designation means milling with C-axis indexing for centerline operations like cross-drilling, tapping, flat milling, and keyway cutting.

The main spindle delivers 15 kW (20 hp) at up to 4,500 RPM through an A2-6 spindle nose with 52 mm (2.05 in) bar capacity. The 12-station turret accepts live tools running at 6,000 RPM with 3.7 kW (5 hp) using BMT 55 or bolt-on tooling. C-axis indexing provides 0.0001-degree resolution. Max turning diameter is 343 mm (13.5 in) over a 580 mm (22.83 in) swing, with 524 mm (20.63 in) of turning length.

Axis travels are 200 mm (X) and 540 mm (Z) with rapids of 30 m/min on both axes. At approximately 4,000 kg (8,818 lb), the QT-Ez 8M adds about 500 kg over the base model due to the live tooling hardware. The BMT 55 turret option provides better rigidity than VDI-style tooling for milling operations.

Running MAZATROL SmoothEz on a 15-inch touchscreen, the control handles conversational programming for both turning and milling cycles. The QT-Ez 8M is Mazak's most affordable 8-inch turning center with milling capability. New pricing runs $80,000-$120,000. For off-center milling, step up to the QT-Ez 8MY. Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • BMT 55 turret option provides excellent milling rigidity at this price point, outperforming VDI-style alternatives
  • Built-in motor spindle eliminates belt vibration for smoother surface finishes on turned features
  • 6,000 RPM live tooling handles cross-drilling, tapping, flat milling, and keyway cutting on centerline
  • MAZATROL SmoothEz conversational programming reduces setup time for both turning and milling cycles
  • Competitive pricing puts Mazak milling capability in the same range as Haas ST-20 with live tooling
  • 0.0001-degree C-axis indexing resolution matches the resolution found on premium Quick Turn models

Limitations

  • 52 mm bar capacity is smaller than the 65 mm offered on the QTE-200M series and some competitors
  • No Y-axis means all milling is restricted to centerline; off-center features need the QT-Ez 8MY
  • 15 kW spindle power is adequate but not as strong as the 18.5 kW found on QTE-200 and Quick Turn models
  • 3.7 kW live tool power limits milling to lighter operations

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Mazak QT-Ez 8M cost?

New QT-Ez 8M machines run $80,000-$120,000 depending on options. The M variant costs roughly $15,000-$25,000 more than the base QT-Ez 8 due to the live tooling turret and C-axis hardware.

02 QT-Ez 8M vs QT-Ez 8MY?

The QT-Ez 8M has milling with C-axis but centerline only. The QT-Ez 8MY adds Y-axis travel for off-center features. If your parts only need cross-drilling and tapping on centerline, save money with the 8M. If you need hex flats or eccentric holes, go 8MY.

03 What is BMT 55 tooling?

BMT (Built-in Motor Turret) 55 is a tooling standard that mounts tools directly to the turret face with a 55 mm mounting diameter. It provides better rigidity and accuracy than VDI-style tooling because the tool sits closer to the turret center of rotation with no overhang.

04 QT-Ez 8M vs QTE-200M?

The QTE-200M has a larger 65 mm bar capacity and 18.5 kW spindle versus the QT-Ez 8M's 52 mm and 15 kW. The QT-Ez 8M has a slightly larger max turning diameter at 343 mm vs 340 mm. Both use SmoothEz. Choose based on bar capacity needs.
