Overview
The Juaristi FX is a floor-type (plano-type) CNC horizontal boring mill designed for the heaviest large-part machining applications where workpiece size or weight precludes mounting on a conventional table. In the floor-type configuration, the workpiece rests directly on a precision floor plate or T-slot floor, and the machine column travels on floor-mounted X-axis rails while the headstock traverses in Y and Z. This arrangement allows the FX to machine components of virtually unlimited size in X — from large turbine casings and ship engine blocks to wind turbine hubs and mining equipment frames — with a spindle diameter of 130 mm or 160 mm.
The FX column is fabricated from high-quality cast iron with internal ribbing optimized by finite element analysis to maximize stiffness-to-weight ratio. The headstock incorporates a W-axis quill with up to 800 mm of travel, extending boring reach for deep cavities without tool changes. Spindle speeds cover a range from 2 to 2,000 rpm, with maximum spindle power of 45 kW ensuring sufficient torque at low RPM for large-diameter boring heads with multiple insert cartridges. A high-speed version is optionally available for operations requiring faster surface speeds in aluminum alloys.
Juaristi equips the FX with a fully programmable facing slide (U-axis) on the spindle nose, enabling contouring and profiling operations — such as taper boring, facing, and back-boring — without special tooling. The U-axis is driven by a servo motor through a precision gearbox integrated into the spindle cartridge, and it is fully controlled by the Heidenhain TNC 640 or Siemens 840D sl CNC. Rotary table options include floor-mounted NC rotary tables with load capacities exceeding 80,000 kg for complete 4-axis work on massive components.
The FX is a specialist machine targeted at heavy industries where individual components can weigh tens of thousands of kilograms and machining tolerances remain stringent. Juaristi supports FX installations with dedicated commissioning engineers, provides certified geometric and volumetric compensation, and offers long-term service agreements that include annual calibration and spindle exchange programs. For shops committed to large-part machining, the FX represents a cornerstone production asset.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Floor-type configuration accommodates workpieces of virtually unlimited X-dimension that cannot be mounted on a table
- CNC U-axis facing slide enables taper boring, back-boring, and profiling without special manual tooling setups
- 160 mm spindle diameter and 45 kW spindle power deliver high torque for large-diameter boring with multi-insert boring heads
- Floor-mounted rotary tables with up to 80,000 kg load capacity support 4-axis machining of the heaviest industrial components
Limitations
- Requires substantial civil engineering investment including precision concrete floor, embedded rails, and chip management trenches
- Long X-axis rails demand careful thermal management and periodic volumetric compensation to maintain accuracy along full travel
- Extremely high capital cost and 18–24 month lead times for fully specified machines limit buyers to well-capitalized operations

Frequently Asked Questions
01
The FX column travels on floor rails in X, so X-axis workpiece length is limited only by the length of floor rails installed during machine commissioning — configurations up to 20,000 mm in X are available. Y and Z capacity depends on the specific model. Workpiece weight is limited by the floor structure and, if used, the rotary table load rating.
02
The U-axis is a servo-driven radial slide mounted at the spindle nose that moves a cutting tool radially while the spindle rotates. It is fully CNC-programmable, enabling the machine to perform taper boring, back-boring, large-diameter facing, and contour profiling operations that would otherwise require specialized boring heads or secondary setups. It is controlled as a synchronized axis by the Heidenhain TNC 640 or Siemens 840D sl.
03
The FX is a horizontal boring mill, so the spindle axis is horizontal. This is advantageous for boring operations, as chips fall clear of the bore. Gantry machining centers use a vertical or inclined spindle configuration and are typically better suited for surface milling. The FX also has significantly higher spindle torque and a W-axis quill, making it superior for deep boring and facing operations on large castings.
