Overview

The Index MS 40-6 is a six-spindle CNC multi-spindle automatic lathe designed and manufactured by Index-Werke in Esslingen, Germany. Engineered for high-volume precision part production in the 40 mm bar diameter class, the MS 40-6 combines the throughput advantages of a multi-spindle layout with the full CNC flexibility that modern job shops and Tier 1 automotive suppliers demand. The machine eliminates traditional cam gear sets in favor of servo-driven axes at every spindle position, cutting changeover times dramatically compared to legacy cam automatics.

At the heart of the MS 40-6 is an ultra-rigid cast-iron spindle drum housing six work spindles driven by a single synchronous AC motor. Each of the six positions carries up to two independently CNC-controlled slides — a cross slide for OD turning and grooving, and an end-working slide for drilling, boring, and threading. Additional rear-working and pick-off spindle options are available, enabling complete machining of parts with complex backside features in a single pass through the machine.

Index equips the MS 40-6 with its iXpanel control interface, running on a Siemens SINUMERIK 840D sl platform. The control features Index's own part-programming environment, which simplifies multi-spindle cycle optimization and provides graphical simulation of all tool movements before execution. Networked connectivity via OPC-UA supports integration with shop-floor data collection systems and MES platforms.

The MS 40-6 is available in multiple tooling configurations including standard cross slides, high-density tooling with up to four tools per position, and special setups for Swiss-style guide bushing operation. Coolant options include through-tool high-pressure coolant up to 100 bar, and the machine includes a centralized lubrication system, automatic chip conveyor, and a bar stock detection system that prevents dry running.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Full servo-driven axis at every spindle position eliminates cam changeover, enabling rapid job-to-job switching
  • High-density tooling option supports up to 4 tools per position for highly complex part geometries
  • OPC-UA connectivity integrates natively with modern MES and Industry 4.0 factory monitoring systems
  • Swiss-style guide bushing option extends the machine's capability to long slender parts requiring exceptional runout control

Limitations

  • Price point above $700K limits accessibility to high-volume shops or large contract manufacturers
  • The iXpanel control, while powerful, requires Index-specific training beyond standard Siemens 840D programming skills
  • Machine weight and rigidity requirements demand pit-mounted or heavily reinforced concrete floor installations

Best For

Tier 1 and Tier 2 automotive component suppliers producing fuel system, braking, and transmission parts at scale Contract shops specializing in precision turned parts in steel and aluminum where order volumes exceed 100,000 pieces per year Manufacturers of hydraulic cartridges, valve spools, and fittings requiring simultaneous OD turning, drilling, and threading

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between the Index MS 40-6 and the MS 52-8?

The MS 40-6 is a six-spindle machine for bar stock up to 40 mm, while the MS 52-8 is an eight-spindle configuration for larger bars up to 52 mm. The eight-spindle layout of the MS 52-8 adds two additional working positions per cycle, which can significantly reduce cycle time on complex parts with many operations, but at a higher capital cost and with a larger machine footprint.

02 Can the MS 40-6 be configured with a pick-off spindle for backside machining?

Yes. Index offers a pick-off spindle option for the MS 40-6 that transfers the parted-off part to a secondary collet for CNC backside turning, drilling, or threading. This eliminates manual secondary operations and enables fully complete part production in a single machine cycle.

03 What bar loader systems are compatible with the Index MS 40-6?

The MS 40-6 interfaces with standard 12-foot and 3-meter bar magazine loaders from suppliers including LNS, FMB Turbo, and Hydromat. Index also offers its own bar feed management software that coordinates bar remnant detection and automatic bar changes with the machine's CNC cycle.
