Overview

The Hurco HBMx80i is the mid-range horizontal boring mill in Hurco's HBMx lineup, stepping up from the HBMx55i with a larger table, more axis travel, and additional spindle power for shops machining bigger castings and weldments. With a 1,800 x 1,500 mm (70.9 x 59.1 in) table, 63 kW (84 hp) spindle, and expanded W-axis quill travel, it handles the larger workpieces that smaller boring mills can't accommodate.

The horizontal spindle delivers 63 kW (84 hp) at up to 2,500 RPM through a BT50 taper, providing substantial torque for large boring bars, heavy face mills, and aggressive roughing on castings. The W-axis quill extends 600 mm (23.6 in) from the spindle face, reaching deeper into workpieces than the HBMx55i for boring operations on larger castings and housings.

X-axis travel is 1,800 mm (70.9 in), Y-axis is 1,400 mm (55.1 in), and Z-axis is 1,100 mm (43.3 in). The rotary B-axis table indexes for multi-face machining, and the table supports up to 6,000 kg (13,228 lb) of workpiece weight. This load capacity accommodates the heavy castings and weldments common in energy, mining, and heavy equipment manufacturing.

The 40-tool automatic tool changer handles complex jobs with multiple boring, milling, drilling, and tapping operations. Rapid traverse runs at 18 m/min on linear axes. Machine weight is approximately 24,000 kg (52,911 lb), providing the mass needed for vibration-free heavy cutting.

The WinMax conversational control provides the same programming advantage found across the Hurco lineup, which is even more impactful on boring mill work where parts are large, complex, and often one-off. Programming a multi-face boring mill job in G-code can take a full shift; WinMax can cut that to hours. The HBMx80i competes with the Kuraki KBT-13A, TOS WHN 110, and Doosan DBC 160.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Larger table and 6,000 kg load capacity handle heavier castings and weldments than the HBMx55i
  • 84 hp spindle with 600 mm W-axis quill provides power and reach for deep boring on larger workpieces
  • B-axis rotary table enables multi-face machining of large parts without refixturing
  • WinMax conversational control saves hours of programming time on complex large-part boring mill jobs
  • 1,800 mm X-travel and 1,400 mm Y-travel accommodate workpieces too large for the HBMx55i
  • 24,000 kg machine weight provides excellent vibration damping for heavy interrupted cuts on castings

Limitations

  • Major floor space requirement and 24,000 kg weight need reinforced foundation and heavy crane access
  • 2,500 RPM spindle speed is lower than the HBMx55i — optimized for torque over speed on larger boring bars
  • Higher price point requires consistent large-part workloads to justify investment over smaller boring mills
  • 18 m/min rapid traverse is slower than VMCs, adding non-cutting time on complex programs
  • BT50 tooling and large boring bars represent significant tooling investment beyond the machine cost

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a Hurco HBMx80i cost?

A new Hurco HBMx80i typically sells between $475,000 and $625,000 depending on options. Key options affecting price include probing systems, through-spindle coolant, enhanced chip management, and right-angle milling heads.

02 What is the difference between the HBMx80i and HBMx55i?

The HBMx80i steps up with a larger table (1,800 x 1,500 mm vs 1,400 x 1,200 mm), more axis travel across all axes, 84 hp spindle (vs 74 hp), 600 mm quill travel (vs 500 mm), and 6,000 kg table load (vs 4,000 kg). Choose the HBMx80i when your workpieces exceed the HBMx55i's table and weight capacity.

03 Can the HBMx80i handle right-angle milling?

With an optional right-angle milling head, the HBMx80i can machine features at 90 degrees to the main spindle axis. This extends the machine's reach into workpiece surfaces that the horizontal spindle alone cannot access. Check with your Hurco distributor for available right-angle head options.

04 What foundation requirements does the HBMx80i have?

At 24,000 kg, the HBMx80i requires a reinforced concrete foundation designed for the machine weight plus workpiece loads. Hurco provides foundation drawings and specifications. Installation typically requires a 10-ton or larger overhead crane for positioning. Consult with Hurco for specific site preparation requirements.

05 How does the HBMx80i compare to a floor-type boring mill?

The HBMx80i is a table-type boring mill where the workpiece sits on a moving table. Floor-type boring mills have a stationary floor plate and a traveling column. Table-type machines like the HBMx80i are better for parts within the table load capacity. Floor-type mills handle even larger workpieces that exceed table-type load limits.
