Overview

The Haas ST-25 bridges the gap between the 20 hp ST-20 and the large-frame ST-30 by putting a 22.4 kW (30 hp) spindle and 76 mm (3 in) bar capacity into the same 533 mm (21 in) swing platform as the ST-20. It is the smallest Haas lathe that accepts 3-inch bar stock, making it the natural choice for shops that need more power and bore capacity without moving to the larger, heavier ST-30 frame.

The A2-6 spindle delivers 407 Nm (300 ft-lb) of torque at 500 RPM, topping out at 3,400 RPM. That is double the torque of the ST-20 in the same frame size, a meaningful advantage for heavy interrupted cuts in steel and stainless. The 88.9 mm (3.5 in) spindle bore handles through-spindle work up to the 3-inch bar capacity.

Max cutting envelope is 330 mm (13 in) diameter by 572 mm (22.5 in) length, identical to the ST-20. Axis travels are 213 mm (8.4 in) in X and 572 mm (22.5 in) in Z with rapids at 24 m/min (945 ipm). The 254 mm (10 in) chuck provides more jaw reach for larger-diameter chuck work than the ST-20's 210 mm chuck. Maximum thrust is 18,238 N (4,100 lbf) in X and 22,686 N (5,100 lbf) in Z, a substantial step up from the ST-20.

The ST-25 fills a specific niche: shops that have outgrown the ST-20's 20 hp spindle and 2.5-inch bar capacity but do not need the ST-30's larger cutting envelope and floor space requirements. At roughly $60,000-$90,000 configured, it costs $5-10K more than the ST-20 but delivers 50% more power and a larger bore.

The NGC control, 12-station bolt-on turret, and HFO service network are consistent across the entire ST lineup. Shops running multiple ST-series machines can swap operators between them without retraining. Specs sourced from Haas Automation published data.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • 30 hp spindle with 300 ft-lb of torque provides 50% more power than the ST-20 in the same frame size
  • 3-inch bar capacity covers a wider range of production bar stock without stepping up to the larger ST-30 platform
  • 10-inch chuck provides more jaw reach for larger-diameter chuck work than the ST-20's 8.3-inch chuck
  • Same compact footprint as the ST-20 with significantly more cutting power and bore capacity
  • 18,238 N (4,100 lbf) X-axis thrust and 22,686 N (5,100 lbf) Z-axis thrust enable heavier cuts without stalling
  • At $60-90K configured, costs only $5-10K more than the ST-20 for meaningfully more capability

Limitations

  • 3,400 RPM max spindle speed is lower than the ST-20's 4,000 RPM, limiting small-diameter surface speeds in aluminum
  • Same 13 x 22.5-inch cutting envelope as the ST-20, so it does not extend reach for longer parts — only adds power and bore
  • No Y-axis option on the base ST-25 means off-center milling features still require a second setup
  • BOT turret rigidity trails the BMT-65 tooling available on the Y-axis variants
  • 3,400 RPM spindle speed trades away high-speed aluminum capability in exchange for low-end torque

Best For

Production turning in 3-inch bar stock where the ST-20's 2.5-inch capacity falls short Heavy roughing in steel, stainless, and cast iron where the ST-20's 20 hp spindle runs out of power Oil and gas fittings, hydraulic manifolds, and pump components in larger bar diameters Shops upgrading from the ST-20 that need more torque without adding the footprint of the ST-30 Contract manufacturers running a mix of 2-inch to 3-inch bar stock across multiple part families

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What does a new Haas ST-25 cost?

Base price starts around $60,000. Common options like tailstock, chip conveyor, high-pressure coolant, tool probe, and bar feeder interface push the configured price to $75,000-$90,000. Used ST-25 machines from 2018-2022 sell in the $40,000-$65,000 range depending on hours and condition.

02 Should I buy the ST-20 or the ST-25?

If your bar stock is under 2.5 inches and you rarely need more than 20 hp, the ST-20 saves money. If you run 3-inch bar, face heavy interrupted cuts, or consistently push the ST-20 spindle to its limits, the ST-25's 30 hp and 3-inch bore are worth the $5-10K premium. The ST-25 also offers higher thrust forces for more aggressive cutting.

03 How does the ST-25 compare to the ST-30?

The ST-30 has a larger cutting envelope at 381 x 826 mm (15 x 32.5 in) versus the ST-25's 330 x 572 mm (13 x 22.5 in), plus a larger swing and heavier casting. Both share the same 30 hp spindle, 3,400 RPM speed, and A2-6 nose. Choose the ST-25 for compact footprint with big power. Choose the ST-30 when you need the larger work envelope for longer or wider parts.

04 Does the ST-25 have a gearbox option?

No. The gearbox option is available on the ST-30 and larger models. The ST-25 relies on its direct-drive 30 hp spindle for torque. If you need the 1,000+ ft-lb torque that the gearbox provides for large-diameter interrupted cuts, step up to the ST-30.
