The sub-spindle is a second, opposing spindle that can grip the part after the main spindle completes front-side operations. The sequence is: (1) main spindle machines all front features; (2) the sub-spindle advances, grips the part synchronously (matched spindle speeds prevent marks), and the parting tool separates the part from the bar; (3) sub-spindle backs away with the part; (4) the turret reindexes to backworking tools and machines the back face, back-drills cross holes, threads, and completes any other secondary features.
