Overview
The DMG Mori NZX 1500 is a compact multi-axis turning center designed for high-precision production of small to medium parts. It is the smallest member of the NZX family, offering up to three turrets with milling capability on every station. The machine handles bar stock up to 52 mm diameter with a 6-inch chuck, making it a strong fit for production shops running smaller workpieces that need multiple simultaneous operations.
Maximum workpiece diameter is 300 mm with a turning length of up to 810 mm. The main spindle runs at 6,000 RPM as standard with BMT (Built-in Motor Turret) milling capability up to 12,000 RPM on the optional high-speed configuration. Each turret holds up to 16 tools, and the Y-axis function can be installed on any of the three turrets for off-center milling work.
The right spindle comes standard, giving you the ability to pick off parts from the main spindle and perform backworking operations simultaneously. This is where the NZX 1500 really earns its keep: while turret one is roughing the next part on the main spindle, turret two can be finishing the previous part on the sub-spindle, and turret three handles drilling or milling. You are running a three-channel production cell in a single machine footprint.
Control is the MSX-850 III with CELOS interface, providing a 21.5-inch multi-touch display with IoT connectivity. The machine weighs approximately 5,500 kg and fits in a 2,705 mm by 2,000 mm footprint, which is compact for a three-turret turning center.
The NZX 1500 competes with the Nakamura-Tome WY-150 and Mazak QUICK TURN 200MSY in the small multi-axis turning space. Its three-turret capability gives it a productivity edge, but the price reflects that additional capability. Specs sourced from DMG Mori published data and dealer specifications.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- Up to three turrets with BMT milling on every station enable true simultaneous multi-channel machining in a compact footprint
- Y-axis available on any turret position gives maximum flexibility for off-center milling, drilling, and tapping operations
- BMT turret technology at up to 12,000 RPM delivers stronger milling performance than VDI-style turrets common on competing machines
- Standard right spindle enables pick-off and simultaneous backworking without tying up the main spindle
- Compact 2,705 x 2,000 mm footprint makes it one of the smallest three-turret turning centers on the market
- CELOS interface with IoT connectivity provides modern job management and machine monitoring capabilities
Limitations
- 52 mm bar capacity limits the machine to smaller workpieces; shops running larger bar stock need the NZX 2000 or NZX 2500
- Three-turret configuration drives the price well above a basic twin-turret lathe, starting around $250K
- Multi-channel programming requires experienced operators or offline CAM investment to fully utilize all three turrets
- DMG Mori service and parts pricing reflects their premium market position

Frequently Asked Questions
01
New pricing runs $250,000-$400,000 depending on configuration. A two-turret setup comes in at the lower end, while the full three-turret configuration with Y-axis on multiple turrets and high-speed milling options pushes toward the top. Used NZX 1500 units from the last 5-8 years appear in the $120,000-$200,000 range.
02
The NZX 1500 handles smaller parts with 52 mm bar capacity and a 6-inch chuck, while the NZX 2000 steps up to 65 mm bar capacity with an 8-inch chuck. Both offer up to three turrets. Choose the 1500 if your work fits within the smaller envelope for a lower price point and smaller footprint.
03
The NZX 1500 is not a Swiss-type machine and does not have a guide bush. For Swiss-type capability in the DMG Mori lineup, look at the SPRINT series. The NZX 1500 is a fixed-headstock turning center optimized for chuck and bar work with multi-turret productivity.
04
BMT stands for Built-in Motor Turret. Instead of driving live tools through a gear train like VDI tooling, BMT uses a direct-drive motor built into each turret station. This delivers higher milling speeds up to 12,000 RPM, better rigidity, and longer tool life compared to gear-driven alternatives.
05
The NZX 1500 can be configured with up to 11 axes depending on the turret and spindle configuration. A typical three-turret setup with Y-axis on two turrets gives you X, Y, Z on each turret plus the main and sub-spindle C-axes. The exact count depends on your specific configuration.
