Overview
The DMG Mori CTX 550 is the large-frame universal turning center in the CTX lineup, purpose-built for shops that need to swing bigger workpieces and cut tougher materials than the CTX 450 can handle. With a 550 mm (21.7 in) maximum turning diameter, 1,405 mm (55.3 in) turning length, and a 37 kW (49.6 hp) spindle pushing 1,200 Nm (885 ft-lb) of torque, the CTX 550 has the authority to take aggressive cuts in stainless, Inconel, and hardened steels without backing off feed rates.
The A2-11 spindle nose and standard 15-inch (381 mm) chuck handle large forgings, castings, and bar stock up to 102 mm (4.0 in) diameter. The spindle runs at 2,800 RPM in the standard configuration, lower than the smaller CTX models but delivering the torque multiplication that heavy-duty turning demands. For shops used to fighting with undersized lathes on large-diameter parts, the 1,200 Nm torque rating means you can push the insert harder and run fewer passes.
Milling capability comes through the BMT 65 turret with driven tools spinning at up to 10,000 RPM and 40 Nm of continuous torque. The 12-station turret is larger and more rigid than the BMT 55 on the CTX 450, handling heavier milling cuts on bigger workpieces. The Y-axis provides plus/minus 60 mm of travel for off-center features, and the C-axis delivers 0.001-degree indexing.
The machine sits on a rigid 30-degree slant bed with box guideways on all linear axes. Thermal compensation includes cooled ball screws, spindle temperature management, and bed temperature control. At 8,500 kg (18,739 lb), the CTX 550 has the mass to dampen vibrations during heavy cuts and maintain surface finish quality on large-diameter parts.
Pricing starts around 20,000 and can reach 10,000 with Y-axis, sub-spindle, BMT 65 turret, and automation options. Used CTX 550 machines from 2015-2022 trade between 10,000 and 80,000. Competitors include the Mazak QT-300MSY, Okuma LB4000 EX II, and Doosan Puma 3100.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
- 1,200 Nm spindle torque through A2-11 nose provides authority for aggressive roughing in stainless, Inconel, and hardened steels on large-diameter parts
- 550 mm turning diameter and 1,405 mm turning length handle workpieces that exceed the capacity of mid-size CTX 450 and NLX 2500 machines
- BMT 65 turret with 10,000 RPM driven tools at 40 Nm continuous torque delivers real milling capability on large workpieces
- 102 mm bar capacity enables bar-fed production of larger stock sizes that smaller lathes cannot accommodate
- 8,500 kg machine mass with box guideways on all axes provides vibration damping for surface finish on large-diameter interrupted cuts
- Thermal compensation system with cooled ball screws and bed temperature control maintains tolerances across extended production runs
Limitations
- 2,800 RPM max spindle speed limits surface footage on smaller-diameter aluminum and brass parts
- Starting at 20K, shops doing mostly small-to-mid-size work should consider the CTX 450 at 60K
- 8,500 kg weight requires reinforced concrete floor and careful rigging planning
- 12-station turret provides fewer tool positions than some competitors offering 16 or 20 stations

Frequently Asked Questions
01
A new CTX 550 starts around 20,000. Adding BMT 65 turret, Y-axis, sub-spindle, and high-pressure coolant pushes the price to 80,000-10,000. Used machines from 2015-2022 sell between 10,000 and 80,000.
02
The CTX 550 is a frame size larger: 550 mm turning diameter (vs 400 mm), 1,405 mm turning length (vs 1,100 mm), 37 kW spindle (vs 25.5 kW), 1,200 Nm torque (vs 450 Nm), 102 mm bar capacity (vs 65 mm), and A2-11 spindle nose (vs A2-8).
03
The NLX 3000 offers longer bed options (up to 3,123 mm) for long-shaft work, while the CTX 550 has larger turning diameter (550 mm vs 430 mm). Choose the NLX 3000 for long parts; the CTX 550 for large-diameter work with milling.
04
Yes. The CTX 550 supports gantry loaders, Robo2Go collaborative robots, and integrated bar feeders. The 102 mm bar capacity works with larger magazine bar feeders.
05
The CTX 550 ships with a 15-inch (381 mm) hydraulic chuck on an A2-11 spindle nose.
