Overview

The Bost FR-7000 is a CNC floor-type horizontal boring mill developed by Bost Machine Tools, Spain's leading manufacturer of large-bore machining centers. The floor-type (or plano-type) configuration of the FR-7000 is specifically designed for very large workpieces that cannot be placed on a rotary table — instead, the workpiece is fixtured directly on the shop floor or on T-slot floor plates, while the machine's column and headstock traverse the full set of axes to access the part. This architecture makes the FR-7000 particularly suited for turbine casings, ship propulsion components, large compressor housings, and construction machinery structural parts.

Bost's engineering philosophy for the FR series emphasizes structural rigidity above all else. The FR-7000 column is a massive steel-welded or cast iron structure that rides on precision hardened guideways embedded in the machine bed. The headstock travels vertically on the column face with minimal stick-slip, thanks to hydrostatic or linear roller guideway systems depending on configuration. The floor plate system, which can extend over many linear meters, allows fixtures to be arranged for sequential machining of multiple parts or for repositioning large single workpieces between operations.

The spindle system in the FR-7000 is engineered for both precision and power, with a bore diameter appropriate for the mid-to-large floor boring mill class. A two-speed gearbox combined with a high-torque servo spindle motor delivers cutting performance from low-speed high-torque heavy roughing through to higher-speed finishing. The spindle nose accepts standard ISO 50 tooling as well as Bost-compatible facing heads and boring bars for large-diameter operations. An integrated quill (W-axis) provides additional axial reach into deep bores without moving the column.

Control is provided via Siemens SINUMERIK 840D sl, the natural choice for machines of this complexity and size. The control manages all linear and rotary axes, spindle functions, automatic tool changer operation, and integrated probing routines. Bost's in-house software integration adds machine-specific cycles for boring, threading, and facing operations, simplifying programming for common heavy boring tasks. Remote diagnostics and connectivity to factory MES systems are standard features in modern FR-7000 installations.

The FR-7000 represents Bost's entry point into the large floor-type boring mill market — a segment where European manufacturers like Bost, TOS, and Juaristi compete on precision, structural quality, and long-term service support. For manufacturers who regularly machine parts too large for table-type machines, the FR-7000 delivers the floor-level access, multi-meter axis travels, and heavy cutting capacity needed to handle exceptional workpiece sizes with consistent geometric accuracy.

Strengths & Limitations

Strengths

  • Floor-type configuration handles workpieces of virtually unlimited size and weight
  • Multi-meter X-axis travel allows sequential machining without repositioning fixtures
  • 52 kW spindle power for sustained heavy roughing in steel and alloy materials
  • Siemens SINUMERIK 840D sl with Bost-integrated heavy boring cycles
  • Spanish engineering with strong European support network

Limitations

  • No integrated rotary table — workpiece repositioning requires manual indexing or additional equipment
  • Floor-type setup requires more operator skill and time for fixturing versus table-type machines
  • Very large installation footprint and foundation requirements
05

Best For

Turbine casings and generator frames too large for table-type boring mills Shipbuilding and marine propulsion component machining Large compressor and pump housing manufacturers Heavy civil and mining equipment structural component machining

Frequently Asked Questions

01 What is the difference between a floor-type and table-type horizontal boring mill?

In a table-type horizontal boring mill, the workpiece is clamped to a CNC rotary table that provides X-axis motion. In a floor-type machine like the FR-7000, there is no table — the workpiece is fixtured directly on T-slot floor plates and remains stationary while the machine column and headstock traverse all axes. Floor-type machines can accommodate much larger and heavier workpieces but require more complex fixturing setups.

02 Can the FR-7000 be equipped with a CNC rotary table?

Floor-type machines can be equipped with free-standing CNC rotary tables positioned on the floor plates, allowing large parts to be indexed between machining faces. These are not integrated into the machine structure but serve the same functional role. Bost can advise on suitable rotary table specifications for the customer's workpiece range.

03 How is the floor plate system configured for the FR-7000?

The floor plate system consists of heavy-duty cast iron or steel plates with precision T-slots, installed flush with or recessed into the shop floor. They are arranged in sections to match the machine's X-axis travel and the customer's largest workpiece dimensions. Floor plates must be precision-leveled and grouted into a suitable reinforced concrete foundation.

04 What tool changer capacity is available for the FR-7000?

The FR-7000 supports automatic tool changers with 60 to 120+ tool positions, accommodating large-diameter face mills, boring bars, drills, and tapping tools. Chip-to-chip tool change times are engineered for minimal downtime, and magazine extensions can be added for operations requiring unusually large tool counts.

05 How does Bost compare to other floor-type boring mill manufacturers?

Bost Machine Tools, headquartered in the Basque Country of Spain, is recognized as one of Europe's leading heavy boring mill specialists alongside TOS (Czech Republic) and Juaristi (Spain). Bost differentiates through in-house manufacturing of all critical structural components, long machine life expectancy, and comprehensive after-sales support. Spanish-built machines are common in European aerospace, energy, and shipbuilding facilities.
